Many countries in the New World and elsewhere officially celebrate as a holiday the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which happened on October 12, 1492. The landing is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States.
The word Halloween or Hallowe'en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. The word "Halloween" means "hallowed evening" or "holy evening". It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day). In Scots, the word "eve" is even, and this is contracted to e'en or een. Over time, (All) Hallow(s) Eve(n) evolved into Halloween. Although the phrase "All Hallows'" is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, all saints mass-day), "All Hallows' Eve" is itself not seen until 1556.
The 11th Annual Florida Encampment will be held October 26th, 27th and 28th, 2017. For information review the attached packet. The assessment paid by Florida Members covers all three nights. Out of state Brothers and Sisters camp free for the three nights. Early arrivals and late departures are at your own expense.
This year we are starting the Encampment on Thursday instead of Friday.
The reason for this change is simple, most people arrive on Thursday and had to pay for that night out of their pocket, now it is covered.
The Encampment will be held at the Sertoma Youth Ranch, the same as last year.
Set your Clocks Back One Hour.
Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months (that feature more daylight) so that people get up earlier in the morning and experience more daylight in the evening. Typically, users of DST adjust clocks forward one hour near the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn.
Starting in 2007, most of the United States and Canada observe DST from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, almost two-thirds of the year. The 2007 US change was part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

We invite everyone from the Nation to come and join us and we challenge EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU to earn your Hard Knocks tab! The details are on the flyer. To earn your tab, you must make it to the top of Mount Currahee. Yes, on foot so dress appropriately. If you've ever watched the HBO series called Band of Brothers then you are familiar with this mountain. This is where the 506 Infantry Regiment trained for basic training prior to being sent over to Normandy. There is a lot more history in this area, There is a beautiful World War II museum where you can take a tour or walkthrough in your own group. The Town is full of great places to eat. And they love the USMVMC!
After the Hard Knocks challenge, we will ride through the North Georgia Mountains and show our Brother's across the Nation what it's like to roll with the Hard Knocks!
After the ride, there will be a blowout party at one of our favorite local watering holes with incredible drink specials specifically for our Brother's and your Extensions! Plenty of hotels within walking distance if necessary. All our Brother's and Extensions are welcome and everyone of you are challenged to make it to the top!
